Mummies have been a long time tradition and have been associated with so many of the ghost movies and some of the greatest stories of all time. The average human being who does not have any specific knowledge on the field always assumes that mummies were constructed by the Egyptians alone. However, what many people do not know that mummies were built all over the world. The Mayans were one of the first to cultivate this practice, and as of today, many Inca mummies are being found all over the region.
A mummy of a 15 year old child had been found in 1999 near Llullaillaco’s 6739 meter summit. An Argentine-Peruvian expedition found the perfectly preserved body and she was nicknamed “La Doncella” which means “The maiden”. According to the Inca she was chosen to go and live with the gods. But in reality she was a sacrifice to the Inca Gods and had been brutally killed in the name of religion.
The specialty about La Doncella is that she is perhaps the cleanest and the most beautifully preserved mummy that has been found ever. Scientists say that her organs are intact and it’s as if she had died just a few weeks ago. From testing the samples of her hair they could determine the type of diet she was on before her death. This led to the discovery that the Incan fattened their children before killing them. Months or even years before the sacrifice pilgrimage these children were given diets which were those of the elite, consisting of maize and animal proteins.
From what it seems, the Incan priests took their sacrifices to the high mountain tops and there, they either left them to die, or killed them there on the spot with a strike to the head.
In the case of La Doncella, it seems that she was drugged and then taken to the mountains, where she was left to die. In the conditions which prevailed, all that harsh cold, scientists conclude that she died a quick but painful death.
There have been many incidents of Incan children being offered as sacrifice to the gods. All these children when taken to the top, were drugged with coca leaves which was to minimize the pain and fear,, and then killed in whatever manner they seemed fit.
For whoever who thought that Incans were a peaceful race, this might come as a rude awakening.
