Mankind’s constant need for natural resources over the last few decades has left the planet covered in giant scars which are in some serious need of environmental ointment. So, here is a list of five giant holes on the face of the earth left by prolonged open cast mining in different parts of the world:

• Kalgoorlie Super pit

In the year 1893, an Irishman named Paddy Hannan saw some gleam of gold in the exact spot where Kalgoorie Super Pit stands now. Located in Western Australia, this place has been continuously excavated for extracting gold for more than hundred years now and has become one of the largest gold mines which is measured at 360meter deep, 3.5km long and 1.5km wide. According to environmental experts, if the mining continues then the size of the pit will grow further and it will no longer be productive after 2017.

• Diavik diamond mine

Situated in the North slave region in one of Canada’s picturesque location, this open cast diamond mine is gouged in an entire island of 20 square km and is only 220 km away from the Arctic Circle. During the winters when the surrounding waters of Diavik Diamond mine freezes over, the view becomes even more amazing.

• Ekati diamond mine

Located only some miles away from the Diavic mine, the Ekati diamond mine has gauged a giant crater in its rush for extracting the most precious stone of the earth. It is also the first commercial diamond mine of North America which was opened in the year 1998. The crater has been predicted to go deeper and become wider as huge carats of diamond are still yet to be extracted from this cold spot in the Arctic Circle.

• Grasberg mine, Indonesia

Rated as the biggest gold mine of the world, the Grasberg mine of Indonesia was first opened in1973 and is also the 3^rd largest mine for copper. Located in the mountains of Papua, this gold mine employs around 19,500 workers and it is mostly owned by the US subsidiaries.

• The big hole in South Africa

The big hole located in Kimberly, South Africa is the result of continuous hand excavation for 43 years by almost 50,000workers with only tools like shovels and pick. During that period, the workers are believed to have extracted 3tonnes of diamonds and shifted more than 22.5million tons of earth. Owned by the famous de Beer brothers, this diamond mine was closed in 1914 and since then has attracted millions of tourists for viewing this spectacular big hole of South Africa.

• Planet Earth is not exactly round

We are not implying our ancestor’s belief that the earth is flat or promoting those Flat Earth Societies but saying that our planet is not as round as we believe has been well-approved by the scientific communities of the world. The Earth is actually a sphere and because of it strong gravitational forces, its shape is not that of a perfect circle. In fact, it has been found that around the Equator, the Earth actually has a bulge and so its Polar radius is 3,949.99miles whereas its equatorial radius is 3,963.34 miles.

• A day on Earth is not entirely of 24hours

Not many people are aware that when we say we have 24hours a day, we are not literally correct because our planet takes exactly 23hrs, 56mins and 4 seconds to complete a full rotation on its axis. This is also known as a sidereal day.

• The only planet in our solar system with plate tectonics is planet Earth

It has been discovered so far that our Earth crust consists of seven major tectonic plates which moves at least 4 inches every year in different directions. So, according to geological theories, when these plates crash with each other, mountains are created and when they pull apart, valleys are born. However, these tectonic movements also results in natural disasters like earthquakes and volcanoes but these activities are also important for replenishing and recycling the basic element of life called carbon.

• Mount Everest is not the highest point of Earth

With an immense height of 29,035ft above sea level, the top of Mount Everest is considered as the highest point of Earth but technically this is not true. Since, there is a bulge around the equator of the Earth so anything present along the planet’s equator is a little nearer to the stars. Therefore, Mount Chimborazo in Ecuador might be just 20, 564ft tall above sea level but because of that bump along the equator it can be a considered as a little higher than the Everest.

• Coldest temperature recorded so far is -128.6F

Antarctica is the coldest place of our planet with an average temperature of -100 degrees F and in July 21, 1983, sensors in Vostok Station in Antarctica recorded the coldest temperature of -128.6degress F. Now with this temperature in July, it will be literally correct to say that the summer of 1983 was the coldest summer of Antarctica.

There is something surprising when you drive down from Moose Jaw through highway Number 2 to the midst of Saskatchewan prairie. You get to see Canadian and Finnish flags flying high on the mast of a large ship from the times of the Great Depression! Are you now thinking what an old ship would be doing in a prairie instead of sailing on the sea? Well, there is an interesting story behind it. This story belongs to a Finnish named Tom Sukanen who became a Saskatchewan settler and later wanted to go to his homeland using this vessel that he had created utilizing his shipbuilding and steel working skills gained in early childhood. Born in 1878 in Finland, Tom’s life journey has probably inspired various Canadian and Finnish theater plays.

Navigation and sailing had become an important part of Tom’s life since childhood as these were the only available trades around the coastal area he stayed in. At a young age of 20, he went sailing to Minnesota in America where he also got married to a Finnish girl and started his family with three daughters and a son. As raising a big family through a small farm was not his cup of tea and dream, he left his family behind and moved to Canada to search for his brother whom he finally met in Saskatchewan after an on-foot journey of 600 miles! After seven years of stay in Canada, finding a homestead and doing financial savings, and creating a helpful person’s image among his neighbors, Tom returned back to fetch his family. To his shock, his wife was no more and his children, except his son, were untraceable from certain foster homes unknown to him. He tried bringing his son back along twice, but the boy was deported back from the border with a warning.

With a broken heart, Tom started working in railways in Saskatchewan, and due to his strong build, he could handle the work of several individuals. But in 1929, when the Great Depression happened, Tom again went back to shipbuilding. From making a heavy rowboat to sail through the waters of Saskatchewan River, he went on to work on a freight ship to Finland. This inspired Tom to take up the task of creating his dream ship that he could sail on to reach his homeland. Despite the Great Depression because of which people were starving, Tom kept on spending his huge savings and additional earnings on his ship, the Sontiainen.

Tom’s superstructure had outer shells of keel and hull made of galvanized iron and steel, with insides made of strong oak. The keel had a top coat of horse blood to prevent it from salt water rusting. With no money left, he couldn’t complete the work of cabins that had to be towed to Hudson River for further assembling, and engine and boiler installation. He got depressed when his neighbors were not ready to help him with this job, and later, the vandalism on his ship had totally broken him off. But, he did not resist when taken to an institutionalized hospital where he died in 1943, all shattered and forgotten! It was ironic that Saskatchewan recovered out of drought the same year he died; with flooded rivers, it became easy to carry a ship to the sea.

The most amazing part of Tom’s story is his prophecy in a letter written to his sister from the hospital. It said that there will be three failing attempts to raise and assemble his ship, but only the fourth person’s attempt will succeed to sail it across and then he’d rest in peace. This prophecy exactly unfolded the same way and the fourth man who worked toward it could only raise Tom’s ship. This man was Laurence “Moon” Mullin who got the ship renovated and moved, as well as got Tom’s remains moved to a chapel near the ship to allow him rest in peace. The Sotiainen is now famous as the Sukanen Ship and Pioneer Village Museum, which symbolizes a dream’s power and the dreamer’s ambition and strength.

How far can you go to realize your passion? They say passion and ambition can drive people into doing things that they would never have even thought of doing! Yes, and that is absolutely true! Need a proof to justify the statement? Take Henryk Jenowski for an example. A Polish photographer by profession, Henryk went an extra mile to fulfil what he desperately wanted to do – click photographs of beautiful birds in their entirely natural poses, just from inches away! Well, that is a difficult task to do! But then, perseverance pays! Let’s find out how exactly Henryk succeeded at it.

Why did he do it actually?

The photographer says that there is kind of a swamp in front of his house. Every year, scores of beautiful air-residents visit it. Nevertheless, getting a quick natural snap in such a difficult area as a swamp is something quite impossible to do. It gets all the more difficult when you get to close quarters near those birds and they simply chose to fly away because you are a human being. Frustrating, is it not? That is exactly how Henryk felt at the first place! But determination takes the better part out!

Amazing idea, indeed!

He crafted a suit that resembles a swan, so that the birds and beavers cannot make out who is standing nearby. As a result, they keep tossing along in their playful mood, without being disturbed the least. It thus became easy to take wonderful clicks from extremely close locations. Walking all the way through the swamp was difficult though, but the results were wonderfully rewarding! To make things all the better, Henryk fetched himself a diving suit so that he could sit under the water layer for long hours, without even letting the beasts come to know that he were there. Under the swan disguise, it seems, the photographer completely camouflaged himself!

See, when you want something from the core of your heart, your brain works out some or the other deadly plan to achieve it. As for our photographer, his idea was a smashing and whacking success!

Experiments with different types of booze are not new. The public is very demanding and they want new things to taste and new enjoyments. Jason Barber, a dairy farmer from West Dorset, has invented the Milk Vodka. He has stated that he loves vodka and he has a dairy firm consisting of 250 milk giving cows. He tried to make vodka from milk because he wanted to combine his passions for milk and vodka. When asked why use milk and not any other ingredient Jason answered that with so much milk available to him he could not resist himself from trying to make his favorite drink with the help of it. The results of his experiments seem to have gone really well as it is in high public demand already. It seems likely that soon enough other dairy farmers will also come up with such innovative attempts at making alcoholic beverages.

How is the Milk Vodka made?

The Milk Vodka uses pure, fresh milk as its only ingredient. The texture of this drink is very rich and creamy. The creamy texture makes this liquor a pleasurable drink. The fresh milk from the cows is separated into whey and curd. The separated curd is used to make tasty cheese. The whey is collected and fermented to prepare beer. A special type of yeast is used for fermenting the whey. The beer is then blended to make the Milk Vodka. The vodka thus made is distilled many times and it is being served at the Canteen in Plymouth.

Men would do anything to distinguish themselves from the crowd and the mere existence of luxury brands such as Hermes is a testimony to that. You may have heard about some expensive piece of clothing, which offers something out-of-the-box but not something of this type. Hermes has come up with a t-shirt made of crocodile skin, which was displayed in its Spring 2013 menswear collection as part of its crocodile chiffon shirts collection. The croco-tee has been tagged to a ludicrous price of $91,500, an amount that could buy you a handful of automobiles. We don’t know yet if the price signifies the cost of the t-shirt or the crocodile.

Surprisingly, Hermes is offering a range of other shirts in this category priced in the range of $60,000-$100,000. While Hermes might have made news with its new absurd line of product, people at animal rights organization, PETA seem to be less amused. Honestly speaking we too don’t see a reason to sacrifice a crocodile to manufacture a six-figure t-shirt when we can do so with diamond-embedded or gold plated ones. Those of you who admire crocodiles as creatures may not like it or maybe you’re thinking that wearing one of such t-shirts will get you closer to your loving creature.

It would be interesting to know if the croc-tees would find any prospective buyers. We wouldn’t be surprised if sooner or later someone comes up to possess one of these as we have found in the past that absurdly expensive products are not impossible to sell. We’re sure that someone will find the killer looks of this t-shirt amusing; however, we‘re less sure whether a t-shirt made of crocodile skin in summers would be a right choice.
